Negative
No follow-up required. To stay HIV-negative, remember there are a number of HIV prevention services available, including free condoms, harm reduction equipment, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

If you had a contact of concern in the past three months, remember to repeat testing once you are outside of the window period.
Invalid
A member of the Getakit team will contact you for more information about your testing experience and discuss strategies to prevent it from happening again. To help us, we would appreciate it if you could save the Manufacturer’s Lot number. This number could be found on the back of the plastic containing the membrane.

Remember, for the test to work, you need to collect a large drop of blood on your finger and let it fall into the bottle – don’t scrape!

Prefer not to report
There is no pressure to report your results, but please know, if your result was positive, we are here to help.
The ‘Resource’ page on our website has information about HIV, testing resources, and emergency support services. If possible, we encourage you to complete confirmatory HIV blood testing to be sure about your result. Please click here to access a downloadable HIV requisition to bring to your primary care provider or to a walk-in clinic. You can also contact your local sexual health clinic for follow-up testing, information, and supports.
If your result was negative, please remember to complete repeat HIV testing if needed 3 months after a contact of concern. You can also visit our Resources page for more information on HIV prevention services in your area, including free condoms, harm reduction equipment, PEP, and PrEP.
Something went wrong with the kit
Because something went wrong while doing the test, an HIV result cannot be confirmed. Please do not continue using the test if the bottles were spilled. To complete the test and be sure of your HIV status, you should log-on to GetaKit.ca and order a new test. Don’t have an account? Sign up and we’ll send you a kit.
If you have completed the test and do not see the control dot, that is NOT considered a damaged kit. It means that the test was invalid. Please see the results graphic for examples of possible results and select the appropriate result.

The kit was damaged or missing components
Because you reported a damaged test or a test with missing components, an HIV result cannot be confirmed. To be sure of your HIV status, you should log-on to GetaKit.ca and order a new test. Don’t have an account? Sign up and we’ll send you a kit.
If any part of the testing kit is damaged or has missing components, please do not use it. Damages to the kit should be visible, such as a cut in the membrane or spilled vials while still in the package. Please contact us if you are unsure and need help determining what your result is.
