What is GetaKit by ACO?
GetaKit by ACO launched in Ottawa July 20, 2020. This project is a pilot study to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a mail-out HIV self-testing program. It is run through the University of Ottawa, led by Patrick O’Byrne (RN-EC PhD) in partnership with Ottawa Public Health, the AIDS Committee of Ottawa, and MAX Ottawa. The OHTN funds this project.
Why are we studying at-home HIV self-testing?
HIV testing is an important part of maintaining your health and wellness, but sometimes getting tested can be difficult. The testing centres might be too far, the hours aren’t convenient, or you might be worried that you’ll run into someone you know. Regardless of why, we want to help make knowing your status less of a chore.
What HIV testing kit does this study use?
This program is using bioLytical’s INSTI Self-test. Research has confirmed that the self-test is very accurate and can produce the same results as the point-of-care (rapid) HIV test is given by trained healthcare providers. Once each solution has been added, you’ll get your result within 1 minute! The kit should be stored at room temperature (2-30°C), and doesn’t have to go in the fridge.
