FAQs
GetaKit says I’m not eligible for an HIV test. How can I get one?
This is a pilot program and a research study, and we don’t have the resources to send a test to every person in Ontario who wants one.
If you think you’ve been exposed to HIV, or if you have symptoms of HIV, GetaKit actually isn’t the resource you need. It’s important you seek immediate medical care from a professional.

I might have been exposed to HIV in the past 72 hours. What should I do?
There are lots of ways to get tested for HIV and STIs in Ontario, and lots of welcoming support services.
You might need PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, 28 days medication that can prevent HIV from taking hold in your body if taken within 72 hours of exposure.
Head to your nearest hospital emergency room and they’ll prescribe it to you.
I need PEP, ARVs or an HIV test, but I don’t feel comfortable going to a hospital.
Ontario has many welcoming and inclusive clinics where you can get tested. Go here to find testing resources near you, Google “hiv and sti testing [your area],” or try HIV411.ca.
I think I have symptoms of HIV.
Your options are similar:
- Head to the nearest emergency room.
- Contact one of the clinics listed here.
- Google “hiv and sti testing [your area].”
- Make an appointment with your physician.
